EDA Holds Virtual Meeting with the Deputy Minister of Health of the Russian Federation to Strengthen Pharmaceutical Cooperation
On behalf of Dr. Ali Al-Ghamrawy, Chairman of the EDA, Dr. Tamer Elhossieny, Vice Chairman of the Authority, held a virtual meeting with Mr. Sergey Glagolev, Deputy Minister of Health of the Russian Federation, to discuss avenues for strengthening joint cooperation in the fields of pharmaceuticals, medical supplies, and biological products, within the framework of the strategic partnership between Egypt and Russia in the pharmaceutical sector.
Dr. Elhossieny expressed the EDA’s appreciation for the constructive spirit of cooperation with the Russian side, emphasizing that Egypt is the first African country to achieve Maturity Level 3 from the WHO in the regulation of locally manufactured pharmaceutical products and vaccines.
He also reviewed Egypt’s national industrial capabilities, which have led to a 91% self-sufficiency rate in pharmaceutical production, reflecting the strength of the Egyptian pharmaceutical system and its competitiveness at both regional and international levels.
He reaffirmed the Authority’s commitment to expanding cooperation with the Russian side, particularly in localizing pharmaceutical manufacturing, technology transfer, and the exchange of technical and regulatory expertise. He stressed the importance of adherence to approved regulatory standards and highlighted the Authority’s readiness to provide the necessary technical support to further develop regulatory systems and translate areas of cooperation into sustainable, long-term executive programs.
The meeting addressed several topics of mutual interest, including a proposal to establish a joint working group to provide scientific and advisory support between the competent authorities responsible for regulating pharmaceuticals and medical devices in both countries, thereby enhancing technical and knowledge exchange. Discussions also covered reviewing mutual requirements for pharmaceutical preparations and medical supplies to foster productive bilateral trade, in addition to reviewing a draft MoU between the Egyptian Drug Authority and the Russian Ministry of Health concerning cooperation in pharmaceuticals, biological products, and medical devices.
For his part, Mr. Sergey Glagolev expressed his appreciation for the pivotal role of the EDA in advancing the pharmaceutical regulatory system, affirming that the progress achieved at both regulatory and industrial levels represents a leading model for regional and international cooperation in the healthcare sector.
This meeting reflects the EDA’s commitment to strengthening scientific and technical cooperation in the fields of pharmaceuticals, medical devices, and biological products, representing a strategic step toward supporting regional integration, exchanging expertise, advancing regulatory systems, and enhancing pharmaceutical security in a manner that serves the mutual interests of both countries.
