Egyptian Drug Authority: Seizure of Unlicensed Warehouses in Cairo, Fayoum, and Giza for Promoting Pharmaceuticals and Cosmetics of Unknown Origin… Confiscated Items Valued at Approximately EGP 12 Million
The Egyptian Drug Authority (EDA), through its pharmaceutical inspection teams at the Authority’s branches and in coordination with the relevant security authorities, carried out intensive inspection campaigns across several governorates, including Cairo, Fayoum, and Giza. These campaigns resulted in the seizure of four unlicensed warehouses used for promoting pharmaceuticals and cosmetic products of unknown origin, as part of the Authority’s efforts to strengthen oversight of the Egyptian pharmaceutical market.
This comes in line with the Egyptian Drug Authority’s commitment to ensuring the availability of safe, effective, and high-quality medicines and medical products, as well as its ongoing efforts to enhance regulatory and monitoring systems and ensure compliance with the legal requirements governing the تداول (circulation/distribution) of medical products.
In the Katameya area, the Authority’s Cairo branch, in coordination with the General Directorate of Supply Investigations, seized an unlicensed warehouse used for filling, packaging, and selling counterfeit oils and products of unknown origin carrying misleading therapeutic claims. The person responsible for managing the entity was apprehended, along with quantities of raw materials, empty containers, counterfeit labels, filling machines, and finished products prepared for circulation. The value of the seized items was estimated at approximately EGP 5 million.
In Fayoum Governorate, the Anti-Internet Crimes Unit of the pharmaceutical inspection sector successfully identified the source of promotion following monitoring and tracking of an online page. This led to the raid and seizure of two unlicensed warehouses used to sell unregistered cosmetic products of unknown origin via social media platforms. Confiscated items were valued at approximately EGP 2 million.
In Giza Governorate, the Authority, in coordination with the General Directorate of Narcotics Control, seized another unlicensed warehouse used to promote and sell sexual enhancement products and weight-loss medications of unknown origin, in addition to narcotic medicines, through online channels. Large quantities of unregistered products, empty containers and capsules, and materials prepared for packaging were seized, with an estimated value of approximately EGP 5 million.
All necessary legal measures have been taken regarding these incidents, and official reports have been filed with the competent departments in preparation for referral to the Public Prosecution to take the required legal actions.
The Egyptian Drug Authority affirms the continuation of its intensive regulatory campaigns across all governorates of the Republic and the adoption of legal measures against any practices that may harm public health. The Authority also urges all citizens not to purchase medicines through online platforms outside licensed pharmaceutical institutions and to report any violations through the Authority’s communication channels and hotline (15301), in order to ensure the provision of safe and effective pharmaceutical services.
