"Egyptian Drug Authority Concludes Participation in Pharmaceutical Inspection Co-operation Scheme Meetings
The Egyptian Drug Authority (EDA) has announced the conclusion of its participation in the annual meeting of the Pharmaceutical Inspection Co-operation Scheme (PIC/S), which was held in Brazil from November 4th to 8th, 2024. The meeting was attended by representatives from 61 regulatory authorities worldwide, including the World Health Organization.
PIC/S is a cooperative program between regulatory authorities in the field of Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) for medicinal products. The program currently includes 56 pharmaceutical authorities from Europe, Africa, America, Asia, and Australia.
The goal of PIC/S is to harmonize inspection procedures by developing common GMP standards and providing training opportunities for inspectors from various pharmaceutical authorities. This drives the implementation of unified GMP standards and quality systems for regulatory authorities in the field of medicinal products.
On the sidelines of the annual meeting, the program held a symposium entitled ""Shaping the Future of the Sterile Products Industry,"" in which the EDA, represented by Dr. Amira Mahgoub, Head of the Central Operations Department, participated. This was one of the various seminars and workshops organized by the program to build capacity and qualify inspectors to update and unify global standards.
Following the conclusion of the participation, Dr. Ali El-Ghamrawy, chairman of the EDA, emphasized the importance of the EDA's joining PIC/S. He stated that the program benefits the local industry by reducing the duplication of inspections, keeping pace with global developments, and making the best use of the regulatory and supervisory capabilities that support the pharmaceutical industry in Egypt. This comes in light of the EDA's obtaining World Health Organization accreditation, serving the pharmaceutical industry and supporting the accessibility and rapid entry of local drugs to various countries.
The chairman of the authority added that the EDA is working to develop mechanisms for cooperation with various regulatory authorities in the field of GMP to improve performance and exchange experiences.
This enhances the ability of the pharmaceutical industry in Egypt to develop and adapt to international standards. He explained that this participation is a step towards strengthening the presence of Egyptian drugs in global markets and ensuring their availability to Egyptian citizens with the highest standards of quality and safety.
