To Discuss the Latest Developments Regarding the Localization of Certain Pharmaceutical Products in Egypt Chairman of the Egyptian Drug Authority Meets with Representatives of Abbott Company
Dr. Ali El-Ghamrawy, Chairman of the Egyptian Drug Authority (EDA), held an extensive meeting with representatives of the global pharmaceutical company Abbott to discuss the latest updates on the localization of certain pharmaceutical products in Egypt. The meeting aimed to address the implementation steps for localization, review the measures taken so far, and tackle the current challenges facing the technology transfer plan and the start of local production. It also included discussions on innovative solutions to address pricing challenges related to the products.
The EDA Chairman emphasized the importance of proceeding with the implementation plan according to the proposed timeline to ensure the start of local production as soon as possible. He highlighted that this would contribute to improving the availability of pharmaceutical products and supporting the Egyptian market. He also reaffirmed the EDA’s full commitment to providing the necessary support to the company in overcoming any obstacles that might hinder project implementation. The Chairman praised the constructive cooperation between the EDA and Abbott, stressing the importance of continued coordination to achieve self-sufficiency in pharmaceuticals and to strengthen national capabilities toward a modern and sustainable pharmaceutical industry.
The company’s delegation commended the significant efforts made by the EDA to support the Egyptian pharmaceutical industry and market, create an attractive environment for investment, provide all necessary support to companies, and promote competitiveness based on transparency indicators and equal opportunities.
The meeting was attended by Dr. Osama Hatem, Associate to the EDA Chairman for Policy and International Cooperation and Supervisor of the Central Administration of Pharmaceutical Policies and Market Access, and Dr. Hossam Abdullah, Associate Chairman of the EDA for Market Support and Continuity. From Abbott, the attendees were Dr. Mohamed Kandil, Regional Director of Abbott Egypt/Saudi Arabia/Africa, Dr. Amr Yehia, Director of Abbott Egypt, Dr. Nagi Helmy, Director of Pharmaceutical Policies and Government Relations at Abbott Egypt, Dr. Basant Amal, Regulatory Affairs Director at Abbott Egypt, and Dr. Soha Ali, Pricing Manager at Abbott Egypt.
This meeting comes as part of the EDA’s commitment to strengthening ties with industry partners, working to localize high-priority pharmaceutical products for Egyptian citizens in alignment with the national localization strategy, attracting further investments, and expanding the scope of the Egyptian pharmaceutical market by opening avenues for Egyptian medical products to flow into adjacent markets, particularly within the African continent.
