The Chairman Of the Egyptian Drug Authority participates in a ceremony celebrating the successful completion of the first phase of the strategic partnership between Gypto Pharma and Roche Egypt.
Dr. Ali El-Ghamrawy, Chairman Of the Egyptian Drug Authority, participated in the ceremony announcing the successful completion of the first phase of the strategic partnership between Roche Egypt and Gypto Pharma, aimed at transferring advanced technology for the manufacturing of biological drugs in Egypt in the field of oncology and the national Gypto Pharma project.
This was attended by Dr. Khaled Abdel Ghaffar, Deputy Prime Minister for Human Development Affairs and Minister of Health and Population, General Dr. Bahaa El-Din Zidan, Chairman of The Egyptian Authority for Unified Procurement, Medical Supply, and the Management of Medical Technology (UPA), Mr. Andreas Baum, Ambassador of Switzerland to Egypt, Dr. Silvia Barcelo, Head of Emerging Markets at Roche Global, Dr. Mohamed Sweilem, General Manager of Roche Pharmaceuticals in Egypt, Dr. Amr Mamdouh, General Manager of Gypto Pharma Drug City, Dr. Amany Gawdat, Associate to the EDA Chairman and Supervisor of the Central Administration of the Chairman Office, Dr. Amira Mahgoub, Head of the Central Administration of Operations, and Dr. Osama Hatem, Associate to the EDA Chairman for Policy and International Cooperation and Supervisor of the Central Administration of Pharmaceutical Policies and Market Access.
During his speech, the Chairman Of the EDA affirmed the Authority's keenness to cooperate with industry companies, transfer successful international experiences to work within the Egyptian drug system, and seek to support local drug manufacturing opportunities, and the importance of localizing the drug industry in Egypt as a cornerstone of the Egyptian state's strategy for the drug file and developing the pharmaceutical industry sector in Egypt, which reflects our understanding of the importance of this vital sector in supporting the national economy and enhancing our capabilities in the field of health care.
He explained that the most important feature of this partnership is building Egyptian pharmaceutical cadres capable of innovation and development, and that paying attention to human capital development in the pharmaceutical sector is a strategic foundation for achieving the sustainable development goals of health care in Egypt's Vision 2030, and that this partnership is the most important of its kind to achieve the Egyptian state's sustainable vision for health care, and to raise the level and quality of local manufacturing, and contribute to transforming Egypt from a consumer of technology to a manufacturer of it, and actively contribute to building Egyptian cadres capable of innovation, which will benefit in supporting the Egyptian economy.
The Chairman of the Egyptian Drug Authority confirmed that the size of the oncology drugs market, specifically monoclonal antibodies, reached sales of 18.2 billion Egyptian pounds at the end of the third quarter of 2024 with a total number of units estimated at 731 thousand units, and is expected to reach about 24.3 billion Egyptian pounds for a number of 975 thousand packages by the end of 2024, with a growth rate of 55% over 2023, in addition to a compound annual growth rate of about 38% over the past 5 years (2019-2023), and noted that given the size of imports in this sector, which makes us have a vision and goal to reduce the import bill, we will find that this partnership targets a localization plan for 8 products that are widely traded, with an import bill cost of 161.7 million US dollars.
He expressed his pride in the beginning of the success of the first phase of this partnership, which aimed to successfully localize the work on transferring advanced technology for the manufacture of target products, which will contribute significantly to improving the quality of health care and providing drugs with the highest international quality standards for all Egyptians.
This comes in light of the Egyptian Drug Authority's keenness to provide all possible support to ensure the availability of Egyptian drugs, and to emphasize the need for companies to continue production efforts to improve the level of the local drug industry in Egypt with global technology and quality, and Dr. the Chairman of the Egyptian Drug Authority has stressed the need to maintain coordination and effective communication between the authority and drug manufacturing companies to ensure the provision of the needs of the Egyptian patient with safe, effective and globally-quality drugs.
