"The Egyptian Drug Authority Launches the Fifth Edition of the Egyptian Pharmacopoeia
The Egyptian Drug Authority has announced the release of the fifth edition of the ""Egyptian Pharmacopoeia"" through the authority's official website.
The monographs of the Egyptian Pharmacopoeia are highly important documents, representing the backbone of this scientific and legal reference. They significantly contribute to ensuring the quality and safety of medicines in Egypt.
A monograph provides comprehensive information on the standards and specifications of pharmaceutical raw materials and finished pharmaceutical products, including the definition, chemical name, molecular formula, chemical structure, and description. It also includes physical and chemical properties such as form, dissolution rate, hardness test, purity tests, and accepted limits of impurities and other substances.
The monographs include pharmaceutical raw materials, pharmaceutical human products, pharmaceutical veterinary products, herbal preparations, biological preparations, and excipients (inactive ingredients).
The monographs of the Egyptian Pharmacopoeia are prepared in collaboration with other global pharmacopeias, which contributes to aligning Egyptian standards with global standards and facilitates the export and import of medicines.
The monograph is considered a vital tool for monitoring the quality of medicines circulating in the Egyptian market, such as antibiotics, antivirals, chronic disease medications (high blood pressure - diabetes - cholesterol), gastrointestinal medications, and respiratory system medications.
By providing clear information on quality standards, monographs can support research and development efforts in the pharmaceutical industry and encourage the production of innovative and high-quality medicines.
Monographs also enhance confidence in the pharmaceutical system by providing detailed specifications for each drug, which helps reduce drug counterfeiting and strengthens the trust of professionals and the public.
As for the general chapters in the Egyptian Pharmacopoeia, they are an integral part of the Pharmacopoeia and are essential for providing a unified and systematic framework to ensure the quality of medicines and regulate pharmaceutical processes. They are a complementary tool to the monographs and provide the scientific and practical basis for applying quality standards.
The general chapters provide uniform standards that are applied in the field of quality control of pharmaceutical raw materials and finished pharmaceutical products listed within the Pharmacopoeia. The general chapters include methods of analysis and physical, chemical, and microbiological tests. They also include manufacturing and quality guidelines and accepted limits of impurities.
The general chapters ensure the consistency and comparability of results. They also provide a clear and detailed reference for the basic principles and procedures for those working in the pharmaceutical industry and drug control.
The general chapters clarify evaluation methodologies, making the manufacturing and control process more transparent, as well as adapting to global health challenges.
The Egyptian Pharmacopoeia seeks to align and harmonize with global pharmacopoeias, scientific references, and global regulatory frameworks in the content of monographs and general chapters. This contributes to raising the quality level of medicines circulating locally and globally, enhancing consumer confidence, and promoting cooperation between regulatory bodies in various countries in the areas of information exchange, joint inspections, and combating counterfeit medicines.
This harmonization also leads to the ease of access of Egyptian medicines to global markets.
The Egyptian Drug Authority has been able to publish 2500 monographs and their associated chapters since the beginning of the year until now and aims to reach 3400 by the end of this year to cover the largest number of medicines in the Egyptian market.
It is worth mentioning that the Arab Republic of Egypt has extensive experience in the field of pharmacopoeias, with the first Egyptian Pharmacopoeia appearing in 1953, followed by updated versions until the current edition.
