Dr. Ali Al-Ghamrawy signed a cooperation protocol with Prof. Dr. Hisham Azmy, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Egyptian Intellectual Property Authority, as part of the Egyptian State’s efforts to enhance integration among its national institutions, support innovation, and localize strategic industries, thereby strengthening the country’s capabilities in priority sectors.
The signing of the protocol reflects the shared commitment of both sides to developing institutional cooperation frameworks in the field of intellectual property within the pharmaceutical sector, supporting research, development, and innovation, and localizing the pharmaceutical industry. These efforts aim to enhance the competitiveness of the national industry, strengthen pharmaceutical security, and advance the objectives of the National Intellectual Property Strategy and Egypt Vision 2030.
The protocol aims to establish an institutional framework for cooperation and coordination between the EDA and the Egyptian Intellectual Property Authority across several areas of mutual interest. It includes exchanging expertise and information on international developments related to intellectual property and pharmaceutical industries to enhance the regulatory framework and maximize the use of IP tools to foster innovation and enhance access to pharmaceutical products.
Additionally, the protocol targets stronger coordination in R&D, technology transfer, and the exchange of technical and knowledge-based expertise. This will contribute to the development of the national pharmaceutical industry, encourage investment in innovation, and create a more supportive environment for local development and manufacturing, in accordance with applicable national legislation and relevant international commitments.
Dr. Al-Ghamrawy emphasized that signing the protocol represents a key step toward strengthening integration among national institutions and maximizing the benefits of the IP system in supporting pharmaceutical innovation and developing the national industry. He noted that the Authority prioritizes establishing a balanced regulatory environment that encourages R&D, supports technology transfer, and enhances the Egyptian pharmaceutical sector’s capacity to develop and manufacture priority pharmaceutical products.
He added that cooperation with the Egyptian Intellectual Property Authority extends the EDA's efforts to build institutional partnerships with relevant national entities. Such cooperation supports the localization and competitiveness of the pharmaceutical industry, contributes to achieving more sustainable levels of pharmaceutical security, and keeps pace with global developments in pharmaceutical innovation and technology.
For his part, Prof. Dr. Hisham Azmy affirmed that signing the protocol reflects the State’s direction toward strengthening integration among national entities concerned with intellectual property and strategic sectors, particularly the pharmaceutical sector, to maximize the use of intellectual property tools in support of economic and health development objectives.
He noted that cooperation with the EDA represents a significant step toward encouraging innovation, research and development, enhancing technology transfer, and supporting the establishment of an enabling environment for investment and innovation in the pharmaceutical sector. This aligns with national legislation and international obligations and supports the State’s efforts to build a knowledge- and innovation-based economy.
The signing of the protocol is part of the EDA’s commitment to expanding areas of cooperation and coordination with various State institutions and to developing institutional frameworks that support the pharmaceutical sector, thereby enhancing the research and innovation ecosystem, supporting local manufacturing, enhancing the competitiveness of the national industry, and contributing to achieving the Egyptian State’s objectives in the areas of pharmaceutical security and sustainable development.
